Outdoor Rock Climbing Midwest Edition!

Being from Fargo Moorhead, outdoor rock climbing isn’t something that comes to mind. We live in one of the, if not thee flattest parts of the country; but the Midwest is home to some amazing rock climbing and bouldering destinations. We might not have as much as Colorado or Utah, but there are some hidden gems if your goal is to get outside!

Barn Bluff!

Location: Red Wing, Minnesota

Distance from Fargo 4-4.5 hours

Sport climbing on the Mississippi River. Low angle faces with lots of crimps and small feet. Technical climbing & finger strength are your best bet here. Focus on doing several boulder problems back to back on our low angled walls (slab, vertical, 15 degree overhang). Choose routes with small crimps and smaller feet.

Eldon Bouldering, Sandstone MN

Location: Sandstone, Minnesota

Distance from Fargo 3.5-4 hours

Bouldering and Sport Climbing along the Kettle River. Sport climbing on old quarried walls, or boulder in Eldon on featured natural boulders! Moon Board for boulders with a mix of more technical on the wall climbs. Eldon offers a little of everything, friction slab to 18 move steep compression!

Location: Interstate Park, Taylor’s Falls MN & WI

Distance from Fargo 4 hours

Bouldering and Trad Climbing/ Top Rope Climbing on the St. Croix River on the Minnesota and Wisconsin side. Doing ropes? Get some laps on our crack volumes. Bouldering? Hit up the Moon Board. The rock here is glassy, so climb on older less textured holds. Lots of Crimps!
